Women's Soccer Wins Pac-10 Opener Over Oregon

Oct. 8, 1999

Eugene, Ore. - The 20th-ranked Stanford women's soccer team opened the 1999 Pac-10 schedule with a victory over Oregon, 1-0, today in Eugene, Ore. The Cardinal received a goal on a penalty kick by senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.) just before the end of the first half to improve Stanford's record to 8-3 overall and 1-0 in the Pac-10.

The penalty kick came as a result of junior Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, Calif.) being tripped in the penalty box with only 48-seconds remaining in the first half. Fair, an All Pac-10 performer a year ago, took the kick and managed to get the ball by the diving Oregon goalkeeper Amanda Fox. Fox tipped the shot, which then deflected off the goalpost before going into the net.

The goal is Fair's fourth of the season and raises her point total to 10.

Despite only one goal, Stanford managed to get off 14 shots on the Duck defense while only allowing four. Junior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, Ore.) made three saves on the night and recorded her third shutout of the season and 32 of her career.

The Cardinal is now 3-0 all-time against Oregon and will face Oregon State on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Corvallis, Ore. In six previous meetings with the Beavers, Stanford has yet to lose a match.
