Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, Ill.)won the singles championship at the 1999 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championships by defeating sophomore teammate Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.), 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
Ranked No. 19 by the ITA and seeded second in the tournament, Granville defeated No. 30 and the fourth seeded Kalvaria to earn her the first singles title of her collegiate career. In order to reach the championship match of the 128-player draw, Granville posted victories over Monika Gieczys of Oregon (6-3, 6-2), Kelly Ramirez of Fresno State (6-0, 6-1), No. 64 Susanne Bertel of Pacific (6-2, 6-0), No. 13 Kristina Kraszewski of Washington (6-4, 6-4) and Kalvaria.
Granville, along with partner Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, N.J.), won the doubles final over teammates Kalvaria and Gabrielle Lastra (Reno, Nv.), 7-5, 6-1. It is the first regional doubles title for both players.
