IRVINE, Calif. - Jonathan Skaalen and Andy Walburger led a balanced Stanford offense with two goals apiece as the third-ranked Stanford water polo team defeated seventh-ranked Pacific in the semi-finals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Saturday at the Anteater Aquatic Complex.
The victory moved the Cardinal to the championship game on Sunday (1:30 p.m.) against second-ranked UCLA. The Bruins advanced in the semi-finals with a 12-9 overtime decision over California.
Stanford led the entire game until a Pacific goal evened the score at 5-5 early in the third quarter. The Cardinal, however, outscored the Tigers, 3-1, for the remainder of the game and held on for the win.
Cardinal freshman goalkeeper Nick Ellis racked up 10 saves in the victory.
Stanford is now 21-4 on the season.
