Nov. 7, 1999

Stanford, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Stanford women's soccer team clinched the 1999 Pac-10 Championship with a 4-0 victory over Washington State today at New Maloney Field. The Cardinal (14-4-1, 7-1-1 Pac-10) also earned the Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA tournament with the win over the Cougars (7-12, 1-8 Pac-10).

Stanford took the lead 34-minutes into the game when freshman Allyson Marquand (Irvine, Calif.) scored her second goal of the season on a header off a cross from freshman Marcia Wallis (Los Altos, Calif.).

The Cardinal clinched the Pac-10 Championship after USC fell to UCLA, 3-0, in Los Angeles today. Stanford has a total of 22 points in Conference play, while USC trails with 21 points. The Cardinal have now captured three Pac-10 Championships (1993, '96, '99) in women's soccer, with the last coming in head coach Steve Swanson's first year on The Farm in 1996.

Stanford scored three goals over a six-minute span in the second half, extending its lead to 4-0. Freshman Becky Myers (St. Charles, Ill.) scored in the 61st minute after dribbling through the Cougar defense to beat WSU goalkeeper Lindsey Jorgensen. Senior Ronnie Fair (Los Altos, Calif.) finished off the Cougars with goals in the 64th and 67th minutes. Fair scored an unassisted goal on a line-drive shot that curled into the left side of the goal, before adding a penalty kick three minutes later.

The Cardinal will now wait to see where they will be seeded in the upcoming NCAA Women's College Cup. The tournament begins with first round play on Wednesday, Nov. 10 and continues with second round matches on Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 13-14. Times and sites of games will be released by the NCAA tonight at 7 p.m.
