The 11th ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team opened the 2000 season with a second place showing on Friday, Jan. 14 at Arizona State. The Cardinal matched up against the 7th-ranked Sun Devils, No. 18 Maryland and No. 20 Ohio State.
In the all-around competition, senior Jen Exaltacion took second place with a score of 38.875, and sophomore Katy Herbert took third with a score of 38.550. In the floor exercise, senior Sarah Harding was the top finisher for the Cardinal, taking second place with a score of 9.900. On the balance beam, senior Jen Exaltacion, Stanford's top beam performer, took third place with a score of 9.875. Freshmen Kelsey Stillinger and Abby Gair participated in their first meet for the Cardinal, and made a good showing. Stillinger placed 8th with a score of 9.750 and Gair placed 11th with a score of 9.650. On the uneven parallel bars, freshman Alissa Cooper was the top finisher for Stanford, placing eighth with a score of 9.775. The 1998 NCAA Champion on the vault, senior Larissa Fontaine was back in action after an injury last season put her out of action for most of the year. Fontaine and junior Jenny Wilson tied for second place in the vault with a score of 9.725.
The team totalled 193.275 points, which was good for second place. Arizona State took first with a score of 194.700, Ohio State placed third with 192.000 and Maryland took fourth with a score of 191.950.
The Cardinal will be back in action with the season home opener on Friday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at Burham Pavilion against No. 16 Arizona.
