DAVIS, Calif. - An injury-depleted Cardinal wrestling squad fell behind early and could not catch up late, falling 23-12 at UC Davis. The Cardinal, wrestling their first dual meet in nearly nine weeks, falls to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in the Pac-10. The Aggies improve to 5-4 overall.
UC Davis won the first three matches of the evening, then picked up six more points when Stanford forfeited the heavyweight bout. Sophomore Ryan Jung (Sacramento, CA/Jesuit HS) then earned Stanford's first three points, posting a win at 125 pounds. Jung, who was replacing the injured Rudy Ruiz (S. Milwuakee, WI/Thomas More HS), a two-time NCAA qualifier, posted his a win in his first career dual-meet bout.
Senior Zach Zimmerer (Billings, MT/Billings Central HS) then won at 133, and sophomore Levi Weikel-Magden (Boardman, OR/Riverside HS) won at 141 to cut the Aggie lead to 17-9. But the Aggies won a pair of bouts to sandwich a Stanford win at 157 pounds by Warren McPherson (Hillsboro, OR/Hillsboro HS), to claim the dual-meet victory.
The Cardinal returns to action in Burnham Pavilion next Friday and Saturday, hosting Oregon State Friday and Portland State Saturday. Both matches are at 7:00 p.m.
