Frenso, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford baseball team opened its 2000 season with a 10-2 victory over Fresno State at Pete Beiden Field on Friday. Senior centerfielder Edmund Muth was 3-for-5 with a double, homerun and four RBI. Muth's three-run homer in the eighth inning iced the game for the Cardinal. The top six players in the Stanford lineup went a combined 13-for-27 with nine runs scored and 10 RBI. Three Stanford pitchers - Jason Young, Mike Gosling and Ryan McCally - combined to toss a four-hitter.
"Our guys swung the bat well tonight," stated Stanford head coach Mark Marquess following the contest. "But this is a veteran squad and we expected them to do that. We also had some nice performances on the mound. It was a solid first game.
Damien Alvarado was also 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI as he singled in each of his first three at bats. John Gall (2-for-4, 3B, RBI), Eric Bruntlett was 2-for-3 with a double an three runs scored, while Craig Thompson was 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored.
A preseason All-America, Young was credited with the victory after allowing just two hits and one run in four innings of work. He did consistently work his way out of trouble as Fresno State did strand seven of its nine runners while Young was on the mound mostly due to three walks and two hit batsmen. Gosling threw four brilliant innings of relief, also allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Gosling also struck out four hitters and walked just one. McCally tossed a perfect ninth inning.
Stanford jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings. Alvarado singled home Gall with the first Cardinal run in the top of the second. An RBI-groundout by Borchard and an RBI-single by Gall in the third put Stanford ahead 3-0. In the fourth, Bruntlett had an RBI-double before Borchard and Alvarado contributed RBI singles.
The teams will continue the three-game series with single contests on Saturday and Sunday, both beginning at 1:00 p.m.
