Pullman, Wash. -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team defeated 53rd-ranked Washington State 9-0 at the Lewiston Tennis Center today. The Cardinal improved to a perfect 5-0 record for the season, while the Cougars fell to 2-2.
Sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) won her second match of the season since returning after competing on the professional tour as an amateur. Irvin took out Washington State's Patrycja Gajdzik 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position.
The Cardinal also received singles victories from freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) and senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA). Granville, ranked No. 2 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, defeated Melissa Pine of Washington State at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1 to remain undefeated in four dual matches. As for Ashley, she rebounded from yesterday's loss at Washington with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Ana Maria Moura of Washington State at No. 3.
In doubles, Irvin and Ashley showed once again why they were one of the nation's top doubles tandem last season as they defeated WSU's Gajdzik and Pine 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. Irvin and Ashley closed out the 1998-99 season ranked No. 3 by the ITA and were ranked No. 1 in the preseason rankings for 1999-2000. Today's match is the second for the duo this season.
