MADISON, Wisc. -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team defeated Bay Area rival and third-ranked California 8-0 to clinch the 2000 USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship held at the University of Wisconsin today. The victory gave Stanford (11-0) its fifth National Indoor title in the tournament's 13-year history and extended its win streak to 29 matches. California fell to 6-1 for the season.
Sophomore All-American Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) led the way for the Cardinal, posting convincing victories in both singles and doubles. Irvin defeated No. 19 Amy Jensen of Cal 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Irvin won all four of her singles matches at the Indoor tournament and has posted a 7-0 record since returning to the Cardinal squad. In doubles, Irvin and senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA) defeated the nation's No. 1 doubles tandem of Jensen and Claire Curran 8-4 at the No. 1 position.
By sweeping all three doubles matches, Stanford took a 2-0 lead into the singles. The National Team Indoor Championship used an experimental scoring system that gave two-points for a doubles sweep and one-point for winning two of the three doubles matches.
Freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) remained undefeated in the tournament after she defeated Cal's Anita Kurimay 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Granville leads the Cardinal squad with a 26-2 record and has won 15 consecutive matches. Sophomore Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) also remained perfect for the tournament after she beat Christina Fusano of California 6-0, 6-2.
The Cardinal is now tied with Florida with five National Team Indoor Championship titles. Stanford is a record 42-5 all-time in this tournament. Stanford defeated No. 14 South Carolina (8-0), No. 17 Notre Dame (5-2), No. 4 Georgia (4-3) to reach the tournament final.
