Stanford, Calif. -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team extended its win streak to 30-matches with a convincing 9-0 victory over 66th-ranked UNLV today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal improved to 11-0 this season, while the Rebels fall to 5-4 on the year.
All-America sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) raised her record to a perfect 8-0 this season with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 25 Katarina Malec of UNLV at No. 1 singles. Irvin also teamed with senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA), a doubles team ranked No. 1 in the preseason, to earn a victory at the No. 1 spot. The Stanford duo defeated Malec and Marianne Bakken of UNLV 8-3.
Freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, IL), ranked second in the nation, improved her record to a team-leading 27-2 with a victory over Veronica Goude of UNLV 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Granville remains undefeated in dual matches with an 11-0 record.
Ranked No. 62, sophomore Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) extended her win streak to 11-matches after defeating Urska Radanovic of UNLV 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5. Lastra has an 18-5 record for the Cardinal this season.
Stanford will now prepare for tomorrow's match against second-ranked California in Berkeley. It will be a rematch of last Sunday's USTA/ITA National Team Tennis Championship final, which the Cardinal won by a commanding 8-0 score. Stanford has a three-match win streak over the Golden Bears, however, Cal is the last team to defeat the Cardinal, winning a 5-4 decision on February 27, 1999. The match will begin at noon.
