Berkeley, CA -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team swept second-ranked California for the second time in less than a week, with a 6-0 victory today at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. The victory extends the Cardinal (13-0) winning streak to 31 matches, dating back to a 7-2 win over Arizona on March 5, 1999. Cal drops to 5-3 for the season.
Stanford, the defending Pac-10 and NCAA champions, beat the Golden Bears 8-0 last Sunday to win the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championship and hold a four-match win streak against California. Cal is the last team to defeat the Cardinal, winning a 5-4 decision on February 27, 1999.
All-America sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) earned her second win of the season against No. 25 Amy Jensen of Cal 6-2, 6-1. Irvin is now 9-0 this season, winning all of her matches at No. 1 singles.
Freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, IL) continued her spectacular rookie season, earning her 28th victory in 30 matches as a Cardinal. The second-ranked Granville defeated No. 88 Claire Curran of Cal 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Currently ranked No. 55 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, All-America senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA) earned a straight set victory over Cal's Karoline Borgersen, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3.
The doubles matches were cancelled because of rain.
