Cardinal Improves to 7-0 In Women's Tennis

Stanford, Calif. -- The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team inproved its record to 7-0 with a 5-1 victory over No. 25 Fresno State today at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Cardinal clinched the match in singles before rain forced the cancellation of all three doubles matches.

Cardinal sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, Calif.) made her home debut with a convincing 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 58 Kim Niggemeyer of Fresno State. Irvin is now 3-0 this season for the Cardinal after taking time away from collegiate tennis to play professional tournaments.

Stanford freshman Laura Granville (Chicago, Ill.), fresh off her victory at the Rolex National Indoor Championships, defeated Kandiss Creighton of Fresno State, 7-5, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Granville has a team best 22-2 singles record this season.

The Cardinal received its final three victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles. Sophomore Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.) defeated Ewa Grusiecka of Fresno State 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4, while No. 38 Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) won her match over Fresno State's Kelly Ramirez 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Junior Sarah Pestieau (New York, NY) defeated Chantel Wiggins of Fresno State 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.

The Cardinal will return to action on Friday, Feb. 11 versus San Diego State at 1:30 p.m.
