FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stanford men's distance medley relay teamof Gabe Jennings, Evan Kelty, Michael Stember and Jonathon Riley brokethe world record at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with atime of 9:28.83. The one-month old record was previously set by the samefour Stanford runners on Feb. 11 at the Tyson Golden Spike Invitationalhosted at Arkansas at 9:30.19. The unofficial split times are, GabeJennings - 2:52.00 (1200 meters), Evan Kelty - 48.04 (400 meters),Michael Stember - 1:48.03 (800 meters), and Jonathon Riley - 4:00.02(1600 meters).
The women's distance medley relay team also finished first at theChampionships, turning in a new school record of 11:01.56. The record waspreviously set earlier this year at 11:18.00. The NCAA Championshipsrelay team consisted of Sally Glynn (1200), Jayna Smith (400), LindsayHyatt (800) and Lauren Fleshman (1600). With the 10 points earned fromfinishing first in the DMR, the Stanford women are currently in ninthplace after one day.
Stanford track and field head coach Vin Lananna said, "The DMRwins were very, very special. No matter what happens in these athleteslives or careers, winning that will be a defining moment for them. It allcame together for them here, and thats what this sport is all about".
The women's distance medley relay was the only final event theCardinal women ran Friday night. Freshman Lindsay Hyatt will advance tothe final in the 800 meters after turning in a preliminary time of2:05.95, which also shatters her old record set at 2:07.23 earlier thisyear. Junior Jayna Smith competed in the preliminary competition of the400 meters, and while she will not advance to the finals on Saturday, hertime of 53.59 is a new Stanford indoor record. Saturday will also seeLauren Fleshman and Erin Sullivan compete in the 3000 meters final.
The Stanford men are in third place with 21 points after thefirst day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. In additionto the 10 points earned from the distance medley relay, Stanford earnedpoints in the 5000 meters with senior Brent Hauser finishing as thenational runner-up with a time of 13:54.27 for eight points, and seniorJason Balkman finishing sixth with a time of 14:06.04 for three points.
Both Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember will advance to the finalsin the mile on Saturday. On Friday, Jennings took first place in thefirst heat with a time of 4:04.52. Stember took second in the second heatwith a time of 4:02.64.
In addition to the mile final on Saturday, Stanford will havesenior Toby Stevenson competing in the pole vault, and Gabe Jennings,Brent Hauser, Jonathon Riley and Jason Balkman will all compete in the3000 meters.
Saturday's events begin with the mens weight throw at 2 p.m.(CST). Track events begin with the womens final mile run at 6:05 p.m. (CST).
