Monique de Bruin Takes Second in Women's Foil at NCAA Fencing Championships

Stanford, Calif. - Monique de Bruin took second place in the women's foil competition at the 2000 NCAA Fencing Championships, hosted at Stanford University. The 1999 Foil Champion could not defend her title, falling to Princeton's Eva Petschnigg 15-13 in the gold medal bout. With de Bruin's second place finish, Stanford is in fifth place after the end of the women's competition with 72 points.

Stanford's Ute Breden finished 8th in the foil. Katie Stephan took 15th and Diane Boudalis placed 21st in the sabre, and Annie Simpson took 16th and Jessica Lisagor finished 17th in the epee.

At the end of the women's competition, Penn State leads the Championship with 101 points. St. John's is in second with 78 and Princeton is in third with 77 points. The men's and women's competitions are scored together in the final team score.

Tomorrow will begin the first day of the men's competition with rounds 1-4 of the foil at 9 a.m.
