STANFORD, Calif. - Michael Stember, a junior from Fair Oaks, set a new meet record in the 1,500 meters to highlight Stanford's participation at the Stanford Track & Field Invitational on Sunday.
Stember was timed in 3:40.71, just breaking the old meet mark of 3:40.79 set by Bernard Lagat of Washington State in 1998. Lagat, now representing Puma, did win the 800 meters in a time of 1:47.97 on Sunday, a meet record. On Saturday, Lagat, the 1999 NCAA champion in the 5,000 meters, won the 5,000 meters at Stanford.
Stember's time qualified him for the NCAA's in early June at Duke.
Stanford produced three other winners on Sunday. Toby Stevenson, the 1998 NCAA champion, pole vaulted 18-2 1/2 to meet the NCAA championship standard. Chad Wassink won the javelin with a throw of 226-7, an NCAA provisional mark. Jayna Smith cruised to victory in the 400 meters in a time of 53.62, easily meeting the Pac-10 Championship standard.
Ja Warren, the 100 and 200 meter Pac-10 champion in 1998 from Washington, won the 100 and 200 meters on Sunday at Stanford. Hooker won the 100 meters in a meet and Cobb Track & Angell Field record time of 10.18, and the 200 meters in 20.58.
Charles Clinger of Weber State a course and meet record in the high jump with a leap of 7-6 1/2.
During the two-day meet, 17 Stanford Invitational records were broken, and 16 Cobb Track & Angell Field records were set.
