Women's Tennis Defeats No. 8 California

STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team (21-0, 4-0 Pac-10) held off eighth-ranked California (14-5, 3-1 Pac-10) today at the Taube Tennis Stadium to take over sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 Conference. Senior Teryn Ashley and sophomore Marissa Irvin clinched the match with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Ashley and Irvin, ranked No. 5 by the ITA, defeated No. 6 Anita Kurimay and Karoline Borgersen of Cal to improve to 9-1 this season. The Cardinal dropped No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinal took control of the match in singles, winning four of six matches. Ranked No. 3 by the ITA, Irvin defeated No. 34 Kurimay of Cal 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1. Sophomore Lauren Kalvaria, ranked No. 7, added to Stanford's lead with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 60 Claire Curran of Cal at No. 3. Senior Jennifer Heiser and sophomore Keiko Tokuda closed out singles with wins at No. 5 and No. 6. Heiser defeated Cal's Christina Fusano 6-2, 6-1, while the 40th-ranked Tokuda swept Morisa Yang of Cal 6-3, 6-1.

Stanford has now defeated California in all three meetings this season. The victory extended the Cardinal win streak to 38 matches heading into this weekend's matches with No. 20 Arizona (4/14 at 1:30 p.m.) and No. 5 Arizona State (4/15 at noon) at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
