STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team improved to 22-0 and 14-0 against top 25 opposition with a 7-1 Pac-10 win over 18th-ranked Arizona (9-9, 3-3) on Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal also improved to 5-0 in the Pac-10, and leads both California and UCLA by one game with three remaining. Stanford, who already owns Pac-10 wins over the Bruins and Golden Bears, hosts No. 9 Arizona State on Saturday at noon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Stanford won five of the six singles matches in straight sets, including second-ranked Marissa Irvin's (Santa Monica, CA) 6-2, 6-3 win over 73rd-ranked Lindsay Blau (Ossining, NY) at No. 1 singles. Irvin, whose world ranking of No. 85 is the highest of any amateur in the world, is now 15-0 on the season.
Ninth-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) also won in straight sets, improving to 31-7 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Michelle Gough (Johannesburg, South Africa) in No. 3 singles. The Cardinal also received straight set wins from 47th-ranked Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA) at No. 2, Jennifer Heiser (Stockton, CA) at No. 5 and Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) at No. 6. Eighty-eighth ranked Uzma Khan (Hyderbad, India) picked up Arizona's lone singles win with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 victory over 82nd-ranked Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV) at No. 4 singles. A 90-minute rain delay at the start of the dual, and the length of the No. 4 singles match forced the cancellation of the No. 2 doubles contest.
The No. 1 doubles match featured two of the top 10 teams in the nation, with Stanford's seventh-ranked team of Ashley and Irvin defeating 10th-ranked Vanessa Abel (Tucson, AZ) and Gough 9-7.
