Stanford's Gabe Jennings Captures First Place In 1,500 meters At Mt. Sac Relays

WALNUT, Calif. - Gabe Jennings proved to be Stanford's top distance runner at the Mt. Sac Relays. Jennings captured the 1,500 meters in his season debut with a time of 3:40.08. He finished ahead of a pair of Arkansas runners, Sharif Karie (3:42.05) and Ryan Travis (3:42.38).

Jennings' time qualifies him for the NCAA Track & Field Championships in June at Duke University. Jonathon Riley and Andrew Powell also made their season debuts and each qualified for the conference championships in mid-May at Oregon. Riley ran a 3:45.67 for seventh place, while Powell ran 3:46.74 for ninth place.

Jennings also competed in the 800 meters where he finished in fourth place with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 1:49.77.

Jason Balkman competed in the 5,000 meters and finished in a time of 13:58.67, an NCAA provisional qualifying time.

Freshman Louis Luchini made his freshman debut in a Stanford uniform and qualified provisionally for NCAA's in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:42.44.

Jason Goff finished fifth in the decathlon with a Pac-10 qualifying total of 7,007 points. Joy Goff placed seventh in the heptathlon with a two-day total fo 4,937 points, one point short of her career-best. Goff's point total qualified her for the Pac-10 Championships.

The Cardinal women's track & field team also performed with high marks. Three distance runners in the 5,000 meters qualified for the NCAA's with outstanding times. Freshman Lauren Fleshman was timed in 15:50.18, Sally Glynn was clocked in 15:59.10, while freshman Erin Sullivan was timed in 16:11.14. A fourth Stanford runner in the 5,000 meters, Elena Villarreal qualified provisionally with a time of 16:33.48.

Colleen Flaherty qualified for the Pac-10 championships in the 3,000 meters with a time of 9:52.55.

Several Stanford athletes also competed in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (4/14) and came away with either NCAA or conference qualifying efforts. Summer Pierson bettered her career-best by nearly nine feet with a throw of 190-0 in the discus, an NCAA qualifying throw. Pac-10 qualifiers were Justin Williams in the 110 meter hurdles (14.52), Omer Inan in the discus (181-3), Malindi Elmore in the 800 meters (2:10.59), and Cassie Romuld in the shot put (46-6 14).
