STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford women's tennis team (24-0, 7-0 Pac-10) clinched at-least a share of the Pac-10 title with its 6-3 victory over 11th-ranked USC today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal extended its win streak to 42-matches and will closeout the regular-season tomorrow against UCLA at noon.
For only the second time this season, Stanford finished the six singles matches tied at 3-3. Sophomore Marissa Irvin, ranked No. 2 by the ITA, defeated 56th-ranked Kara Warkentin of USC 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Keiko Tokuda earned a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles over Tiffany Brymer of USC. With the Trojans leading 3-2, sophomore Lauren Kalvaria, ranked No. 9, won a crucial match to tie the score heading into singles. Kalvaria defeated 13th-ranked Jewel Peterson of USC 6-3, 7-6 after trailing 6-5 in the second game.
Stanford sealed the match with by sweeping doubles from the Trojans. Freshman Laura Granville and Tokuda, ranked No. 8 in doubles, gave Stanford the lead with an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over USC's Jewel Peterson and Veronika Safarova. The Cardinal clinched the match at No. 1 doubles, when the seventh-ranked tandem of Irvin and senior Teryn Ashley defeated Southern Cal's Warkentin and Brymer 8-4.
The Cardinal entered today one match ahead of California in the race for the Pac-10 title. California faced UCLA in Berkeley today and a Bruin victory would hand the title to the Cardinal. Stanford is seeking the team's 13th-consecutive Pac-10 title.
