STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked and Pac-10 Champion Stanford women's tennis team (25-0, 8-0 Pac-10) concluded its regular-season schedule undefeated with today's win over eighth-ranked UCLA (14-8, 6-2 Pac-10) 7-2 at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. This marks the fifth time in head coach Frank Brennan's 21-season's at Stanford that the Cardinal has finished the regular-season undefeated. In all four previous year's, Stanford has gone on to win the national title.
Stanford won four of six singles matches, before sweeping all three doubles matches for the victory. Second-ranked sophomore Marissa Irvin (Santa Monica, CA) pushed her perfect record to 19-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over seventh-ranked Sara Walker of UCLA. Ninth-ranked Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL) recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory over 59th-ranked Amanda Basica of UCLA at No. 3, while senior Jennifer Heiser (Stockton, CA) defeated UCLA's Elizabeth Schmidt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 and sophomore Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, NJ) was a winner over the Bruins' Zana Zlebnik 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6.
Irvin and senior Teryn Ashley (Chestnut Hill, MA), ranked seventh in doubles, defeated 12th-ranked Walker and Basica of UCLA 8-6 in the featured doubles match.
The Cardinal will take part in the Pac-10 singles and doubles championships on April 27-30 in Ojai, Calif. This will be the 100th anniversary of the Ojai Tournament.
