Cal Edges Cardinal In Men's Track

Berkeley, Ca - The 106th meeting between Stanford and California wentdown the final event, and the Golden Bears scored a victory in the 1,600meter relay to defeat Stanford's men's team, 84-79.

With the score tied at 79-79 after 18 events of men's competition,the meet would be decided in the 1,600 meter relay. Stanford led throughthe first two legs, but Cal was able to grab the lead after the threelegs, and then held on to win in a time of 3:14.52 compared to 3:15.47for Stanford.

In women's competition, Cal upset the favored Cardinal, 83 2/3 to 791/3 to end Stanford's three-meet winning streak over the Golden Bears.

There were plenty of highights for Stanford. Gabe Jennings, a dayafter establishing the nation's best time in the 1,500 meters (3:37.33)this year at the Cardinal Invitational, took top honors in the 800meters, winning easily in a time of 1:49.91. Ryan Carroll (1:51.65) andJonathan Stevens (1:53.19) completed the 1-2-3 sweep for Stanford in the800 meters.

Stanford swept the 5,000 meters with Jason Balkman winning the eventin 14:21.98. In fact, Cardinal runners captured the first five places inthe 5,000 meters.

The Cardinal also looked strong in the 1,500 meters as MichaelStember passed Cal's top distance runner, Bolota Asmerom, in the finalstages to win in a time of 3:46.95. Only a night earlier, Stemberfinished third in a season-best time of 3:40.54 at the CardinalInvitational.

Stanford men's team also took first place honors in the 110 meterhurdles with Michael Harte running a 14.60, David Abril in the 3,000meter steeplechase with a Pac-10 qualifying time of 9:07.24, ChadWassink in the javelin (214-7), Toby Stevenson in the pole vault (17-41/2), Chris Sprague in the shot put (57-0 1/4), Todd Beyerlein in thehigh jump (6-11 3/4), and Omer Inan in the discus (180-7).

Stanford's women's team produced several first place winners. WilsaCharles captured the 100 meters (11.91), Jayna Smith in the 400 meters(54.40), Sally Glynn in the 1,500 meters (4:24.50), Elena Villarreal inthe 3,000 meters (9:39.44), Carol Annis in the 5,000 meters (16:43.0),Summer Pierson in the discus (179-6), and the 1,600 meter relay team(3:47.57).

Cal's men's team now leads the series with Stanford, 63-41-2.Stanford still leads the women's series with the Golden Bears, 11-10.
