STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team (1-0-0) scored two goals in the first half and added two more in the second en route to a 4-0 win over Saint Mary's (0-2-0) in the Cardinal's 2000 season opener Sunday afternoon at New Maloney Field.
The Cardinal got on the board in the 12th minute when a Saint Mary's defender headed the ball into her own net while attempting to clear a corner kick from Stanford freshman Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA/ Carondelet). Three minutes later, Stanford added to its lead with a goal from fifth-year senior Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, CA/ Edison). Ward fed Itri with a pass inside the box and her shot to the lower corner beat the Gaels' goalkeeper.
Stanford took a 2-0 lead into the locker room before adding two more goals in the second half. Sophomore Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA/ Gunn) found the back of the net by heading in a cross from Ward. The final goal came in the 88th minute when Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA/ Los Gatos) finished off a run by Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA/ Casa Roble). Carlson set up the goal by bringing the ball down field and sending a cross in front of the goal. A header and a short-range pass from Ward and Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA/ Santa Monica) mixed things up in the box before Wallis was able to put it away.
The Cardinal outshot the Gaels 18-5 (12-2 in the second half). Stanford senior Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR/ Lake Oswego) picked up two saves in the net, while Saint Mary's keeper Ruth Montgomery had six.
Stanford is next in action Friday night as the University of Wisconsin comes to town. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
