STANFORD QUOTES

Quotes from Tyrone WillinghamOf Deonce Whitaker
"He did not surprise us. He played the same style and standard he's played his entire career."

"One team played better tonight. They did more things right than we did. There were some bright points to our offense, but there were also some we'd like to have another shot at. Obviously, we didn't have enough good things to carry us over the hump."

"They did a lot of things right. We weren't able to keep the level of consistency we needed in the second half. There were good things, but we weren't able to sustain."

Quotes from Willie Howard"We played with a lot of potential and a lot of heart, but when we needed to make tackles, we didn't. When we needed to score, we didn't."

"We got beat twice today. We beat ourselves and they beat us. The best thing to do is put yourself in a position to win, and we didn't do that."

SAN JOSE STATE QUOTESSan Jose State Head Coach Dave Baldwin

That was a tough one. I knew we were ready. We (the coaches) didn't try any (motivational) tricks, we just talked about getting respect and you earn respect on the football field. I think we earned respect tonight.

I am very, very impressed with (Randy) Fasani. He is a very mobile quarterback and forced us to go after him.

On halfback Deonce Whitaker
He is a very, very special player. Stanford keyed on him and tried to take him away, but he slipped through. As coaches, it would be ridiculous for us not to get him the ball.

On quarterback Marcus Arroyo
I was very impressed with Marcus, and thought he played well.

On offensive line
The key to the game was our offensive line - they did just an outstanding job. We came out early and established the run and gave Marcus great pass protection, which allowed him to gain confidence. Riall Johnson and Willie Howard are both great players, but we were able to pretty much keep them away.

On defense
Our defense gave up a lot of yards, but we kept them out of the end zone at the right time. It's a young defense, and we are going to grow. (Defensive Coordinator) Paul Arslanian had a great game plan - we kept coming after Fasani, putting pressure on him and hitting him. Who knows, maybe if he doesn't get hit so often, some of those passes at the end are complete - I think Fasani got a little tired.

On team
I think this is just the beginning. I think we have a very special team, we just have to make sure we come out and do the same thing against Southern Utah.

San Jose State Running Back Deonce Whitaker

I want to give thanks to the offensive line. They were great, and opened up holes all night long.

We came up here ready to play. I think people have to believe now that us beating Stanford is not a fluke.

I couldn't ask for anything better than this. The first year, I only returned 3 kickoffs. To come back and be able to participate and jump on the fence after we won, it was great.
