St. louis, Mo. -- After one day of rest, the Cardinal came out strong against the Mountaineers. Stanford (3-0) has tallied three shutouts this year, all against conference opponents. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro has stared the season with three straight shutouts after recording four during the 1999 season.
Freshman Noor Dawood began the scoring with a goal in the first half. Sophomore Amrit Chima tacked on the second goal with an assist from junior Melissa Stai in the second half of play. Stai completed the scoring for Stanford on the first penalty stroke of the season.
The Cardinal's offensive domination continued with Stanford taking 28 shots to Appalachian State's four. Stanford continues to stymie opponents' goalkeepers by taking 72 shots on the year. The Stanford offense has 10 goals in three games compared to last season's total 34 goals. Stai led the Cardinal attack with nine shots on the day, bringing her season total to a team-leading 22.
The Stanford defense has also been impressive. Goalkeeper Shapiro leads the Cardinal defense and recorded three saves on the day to bring her season total to nine. The Stanford goalkeeper remains perfect, with no goals allowed in her first three games. Last year, she set an impressive season mark of 1.13 goals allowed while starting each of the Cardinal's 18 games and facing 151 shots.
The Ohio State Buckeyes (3-0) are Stanford's next opponent. The Sunday, Sept. 3 match will be the Cardinal's first non-conference game. The Buckeyes return seven starters from last year's 12-7 team and expect to make a strong showing this season. Stanford returns to The Farm after a game agaisnst Iowa on Monday, September 4 and opens its home season on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks.
