NOTRE DAME, Indiana - The Stanford women's soccer team lost a heartbreaker in the final game of the KeyBank Classic on Sunday. No. 4 Notre Dame used an own goal with :18 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Cardinal its first loss of the season as the Irish picked up a 2-1 win. No. 10 Stanford falls to 3-1-0, while Notre Dame improves to 5-0-0.
The winning goal came after Notre Dame's Amy Warner sent a low cross from the right endline. A Stanford player attempted to clear the ball before another Cardinal player deflected it into the goal at the 104:42 mark.
The Irish held a 27-6 shot advantage, while Stanford senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) tallied a career-high 14 saves. Smolak was named the tourney's Most Valuable Goalkeeper (17 saves, one shutout).
Notre Dame broke a scoreless tie when Amy Warner scored in the 35th minute. The goal marked the first time Stanford had been scored upon in the 2000 season.
The Irish took a 1-0 lead into halftime before Stanford sophomore Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) evened the score just over 10 minutes into the second half. Her second goal of the tournament, and third of season, came in the 56th minute on a counterattack. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) and senior captain Celina DeLeon (South Pasadena, CA) were both credited with assists.
Stanford was forced to play with 10 players for the final 8:37 of regulation and the overtime period when sophomore Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) was ejected after a red-card violation.
Joining Smolak on the All-Tournament team were Wallis and freshman forward Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA). Wallis recorded two goals and an assist over the weekend, while Ward scored once and had five shots on goal.
The Cardinal is next in action Friday night at 7:30 against No. 16 Virginia in the first round of the Stanford Nike Invitational at New Maloney Field.
