Cardinal Women's Soccer Wins Opener Of Stanford Nike Invitational

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 6 Stanford women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half and went on to defeat No. 13 Virginia 3-1 in the opening round of the Stanford Nike Invitational Friday night at New Maloney Field. The Cardinal improves to 4-1-0 with the win, while the Cavaliers drop to 3-3-0.

Stanford got on the board early when sophomore Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) found the back of the net at the 7:59 mark for her fourth goal of the season. Wallis followed up a shot from inside the box, giving the Cardinal a 1-0 lead.

Virginia came back to tie the score in the 29th minute as Lori Lindsey converted a cross from Laura Gaworecki. The Cavaliers outshot the Cardinal 9-5 in the first half.

With :40 seconds remaining in the first half, freshman Brittany Oliviera (Los Angeles, CA) scored the go-ahead goal with assists coming from Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA).

Ward added an insurance goal for the Cardinal at the beginning of the second half. Erin Maurer (St. Louis, MO) sent a long ball, which Ward ran down and turned into her third goal of the year.

Senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) kept the Cardinal in the game early on as the Cavaliers pounded out six shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. Virginia had three one-on-one opportunities in the first half, all of which Smolak stopped. She finished with eight saves, moving into a tie for fourth place on the all-time saves list on The Farm.

The tournament concludes on Sunday with Stanford facing No. 23 Maryland (4-3-0) at 1:00 p.m. Virginia and Santa Clara (4-2-0) will play at 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

In the first game of the night, No. 19 Santa Clara broke a 2-2 tie with two goals in the second half and defeated Maryland 4-2.
