STANFORD, Calif. - Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored two goals as the No. 6 Stanford women's soccer team defeated Maryland 3-0 Sunday afternoon to capture the Stanford Nike Invitational title at New Maloney Field. With the win, the Cardinal improves to 5-1-0, while Maryland falls to 4-4-0.
Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) gave Stanford the lead in the 10th minute when she scored on a breakaway set up by midfielder Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA). It was Ward's fourth goal of the year and second goal of the tournament.
Wallis tallied the first of her two goals with :09 seconds remaining in the first half. Christy LaPierre (Gold River, CA) sent the ball down the left sideline before freshman Brittany Oliviera (Los Angeles, CA) tracked it down in the corner and crossed it to the center. Wallis was right there for the one-touch goal, giving the Cardinal a 2-0 lead at the half.
At the 56:01 mark, Ward fed Wallis with a pass inside the box for Wallis' sixth goal of the season (third of the tournament). Stanford outshot the Terrapins 17-5, including a 9-1 advantage in the first half.
In goal for Stanford, senior Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) recorded her fourth shutout of the year, while picking up three saves on the day.
The Cardinal placed four players on the All-Tournament team. Junior defender Amy Sauer (Spring, TX) was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while Ward, a forward, was also honored. Senior Celina DeLeon (South Pasadena, CA) and senior captain Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, CA) were all-tournament selections as well.
In Sunday's first game, No. 13 Virginia got a goal in the 76th minute from Sarah Lane as the Cavaliers held on to defeat No. 19 Santa Clara 1-0.
The Cardinal will next be in action Friday night against Santa Clara in a first round game of the Adidas Bay Area Classic at San Jose State. Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m.
