Stanford, Calif. -- Stanford (4-5, 3-1 NorPac) and SW Missouri State (5-3, 3-0 NorPac) played an intense match that came down to the second series of penalty strokes to give the Bears a 1-0 victory. Neither team was able to score during regulation or the two sudden-death overtime periods.
The first series of penalty strokes ended with each team scoring one. SW Missouri State then grabbed a slight edge by scoring three in the second series. The Cardinal scored one, but the Bears fifth stroker, Stephanie Dixon, managed to get a piece of the goal to score the third for the visitors.
Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro played 100 minutes without a goal allowed.
The Cardinal next face cross-bay rival California in a 1 pm match on Saturday, Sept. 23 on The Farm. The Golden Bears are the defending conference champions, but the Cardinal have won eight NorPac titles under head coach Sheryl Johnson.
