No. 12 Men's Soccer Blanks Xavier 5-0

Sept. 2, 2000

STANFORD, Calif. - - Five different Cardinal players scored as No. 12 Stanford posted a 5-0, season-opening victory over Xavier in the first round of the Nike Goal Rush Classic in Fresno, California. Stanford outshot the Musketeers 26-4 as 11 different Cardinal players registered shots on goal.

Stanford wasted little time in netting its first goal of the 2000 campaign, as senior Corey Woolfolk found the back of the net at the 8:19 mark following a cross from fellow senior Luke Rust. Scott Leber gave the Cardinal a 2-0 cushion just before halftime, scoring off an assist by Aaron Biddle 16 seconds before intermission.

Biddle, a junior defender, beat the Xavier goalkeeper to the far post for his first collegiate goal and a 3-0 Stanford lead in the 56th minute. The Cardinal then added a pair of insurance goals late in the match, with Derek Shanahan scoring at 86:08 and Roger Levesque at 87:16.

Stanford senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala made a pair of saves en route to his 37th career shutout, an ongoing school record. Xavier keeper Paul Wesseling finished with nine saves.

Stanford continues play in the Nike Goal Rush Classic on Sunday, Sept. 3, when it faces Western Kentucky at 12 noon.
