MORAGA, Calif. - - Five different players scored goals as the No. 21 Stanford men's soccer team posted a 5-0 non-conference road win at Saint Mary's. With the victory, the Cardinal improves to 6-0-0. The Gaels drop to 2-5-0.
Stanford scored four of its goals in the first half, including senior midfielder Ryan Nelsen's game-winner at 4:38. Todd Dunivant's corner found a diving Nelsen, who headed the ball past Saint Mary's goalkeeper Kellan Wilson. The Cardinal extended the lead to 2-0 in the 10th minute, when defender Lee Morrison sent a through ball to Luke Rust, who slotted a shot to the far post. Corey Woolfolk connected at 29:28, heading in a cross from Aaron Biddle and giving Stanford a 3-0 cushion. Scott Leber finished the first-half scoring when he converted a feed from Roger Levesque at 39:50. Leber, who has recorded a point in each of the first six games, now leads the Cardinal with seven goals on the year.
Stanford tallied just one score in the second half, and that came in the 82nd minute courtesy of a corner kick from Matt Moses and a header from Morrison.
Senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala made four saves in 75 minutes of work while sophomore Andrew Terris finished Stanford's sixth consecutive shutout, one shy of the school record set by the 1997 squad. The Cardinal also remain one of two teams in the nation - along with Stony Brook - to have not allowed a goal thus far in 2000.
Stanford is next in action on Tuesday, September 26, when they travel to Spartan Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. match with No. 19 San Jose State.
