SAN JOSE, Calif. - The No. 5-ranked Stanford women's soccer team was upset by No. 19 Santa Clara 4-2 Friday night in the opening round of the adidas Bay Area Soccer Classic at San Jose State. The Cardinal falls to 5-2-0, while the Broncos improve to 5-3-0.
Santa Clara jumped out to an early lead when Kathleen Celio scored in the eighth minute. Aly Wagner recorded the second goal of the game, and Veronica Zepeda increased the Broncos' lead to 3-0 with a goal just before halftime. Five minutes into the second half, Celio scored the fourth goal for the Broncos.
The Cardinal didn't get on the board until the 71st minute when senior captain Christy LaPierre (Gold River, CA) tallied her first goal of the season. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) picked up the assist. Stanford scored again at the 84:08 mark when sophomore forward Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) found the back of the net for her team-leading seventh goal of the season, off an assist from Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA).
The Broncos outshot the Cardinal 18-11 in the game, including 12-5 in the first half, and Stanford held the advantage in corner kicks 6-5. There were 33 fouls in the game (21 for Stanford).
Senior Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) recorded six saves, while Bronco keeper Alice Gleason had five saves.
The Cardinal is next in action Sunday when it takes on host San Jose State in the final day of the tournament. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
