Box Score

The 7th-ranked UCLA Bruins handed the Cardinal its second straight Pac-10 loss tonight at Maples Pavilion, winning 3-0 before a crowd of 2,432. Game scores were 15-11, 15-2, 15-11.

Stanford drops to 7-4 overall, 2-2 in conference action, while the Bruins improve to 9-3, 4-0 in the Pac-10.

Although Stanford lost the match, the Cardinal attack was much improved from Friday night. Stanford hit .000 versus USC while hitting .281 tonight against UCLA.

Game one was a back and forth battle between the two teams. With the Cardinal trailing 9-8, the Bruins came up big with a block by Ashley Bowles and Ella Harley. They extended the lead to 12-8 on a Cardinal ball-handling error before middle blocker Jenn Detmer recorded a block solo to give Stanford a point. The Cardinal would creep to 10-13 before a kill by Kristee Porter and another ball-handling error got the Bruins to game point. Stanford would hold off one game point, but a kill by Lauren Fendrik would seal the win for UCLA.

The Bruins dominated in game two, hitting .464 for the match. Stanford would battle, though, holding off six game points. UCLA scored 14 points before the Cardinal recorded their first point, a kill by outside hitter Ashley Ivy. The Bruins won the game, 15-2. The last time, Stanford was held to just two points in a game was last year in the NCAA final versus Penn State.

Game three was another battle between the Bruins and the Cardinal. The two teams tied six times during the game - the last coming at 10-10. UCLA would rattle off the next three points to take the critical 13-10 lead. Stanford would cut the lead to 13-11 on an error by Elisabeth Bachman but could get no closer. Ashley Bowles would close out the game and the match for the Bruins with a kill.

Stanford was led by middle blocker Jennifer Detmer who notched a team-high 12 kills on the night. Freshman outside hitter Sara Dukes would add nine kills while outside hitter Michelle Chambers tallied a team-high 10 digs.

The last time Stanford dropped back-to-back matches was in 1995 when the Cardinal lost at Texas and to Texas A&M (in Chicago). The last time the Cardinal lost two conference matches in a row was in 1993, losing at Arizona State and Arizona. The last time Stanford lost two consecutive matches in Maples Pavilion was in 1990 when the team lost to UCLA and Pacific. Tonight marked the first time the Cardinal has dropped two matches to Pac-10 opponents in Maples.

Stanford will continue conference play with a road trip to the Arizona schools next week.
