No. 13 Men's Soccer Downs Seton Hall 5-0

Stanford, Calif. - - Stanford received two goals each from senior Luke Rust and sophomore Johanes Maliza as the 13th-ranked Cardinal blanked Seton Hall 5-0 in the first round of the Stanford/Nike Invitational at New Maloney Field.

With the victory, Stanford improves to 7-0-1 and runs its home unbeaten streak to 18 matches. Seton Hall falls to 4-5-0.

Stanford scored just one of its goals in the first half, as Rust netted the eventual game-winner at the 8:59 mark. Matt Moses made a brilliant spin move to beat a defender on the right sideline and sent a cross to Rust, who drilled a header into the back of the net.

Just 1:32 into the second half, Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 when a long cross was headed in by Seton Hall defender Alim Ibragimov for an own goal. Rust then added his second goal at 52:28 off a double assist from Ryan Nelsen and Scott Leber. With the 3-0 lead, Maliza put on an offensive show, scoring twice within a :30-second span. His first goal came off a through ball from Corey Woolfolk at 87:00 and then, at 87:30, Roger Levesque fed Maliza for a one-touch bullet.

Cardinal senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala recorded one save in posting his seventh shutout (third shared) of the season. Seton Hall netminder Alex McDonald finished with three saves. Stanford outshot the Pirates 19-3, including an 11-1 margin in the second half.

In the first game, Cincinnati's Brad Woods scored at 40:59 and Bearcat keeper Sacha Nathu made five saves in a 1-0 shutout of California. Woods scored when he corralled a rebound of a Brandon Dobbs chip shot and drilled a shot to the lower left corner.
