SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 13 Stanford women's soccer team battled No. 17 Wake Forest to a 2-2 tie in double overtime Friday night in the first round of the Santa Clara Adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cardinal is now 6-2-1 while the Demon Deacons are 6-3-1.
The game went back and forth before Wake Forest tied it with eight minutes remaining. The score remained tied at the end of regulation and throughout the two fifteen-minute overtime periods.
Christy LaPierre (Gold River, CA) gave the Cardinal a 1-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) picked up her team-leading ninth assist of the year when she crossed the ball from the right side to the back post. LaPierre took two touches on the ball before firing a shot to the lower right hand corner.
Wake Forest's Joline Charlton tied the game midway through the second half with a 25-yard shot from outside the box. Sarah Kate Noftsinger fed Charlton with the ball before she fired it into the upper left hand corner.
Ward put Stanford up 2-1 when she tallied a goal in the 67th minute as her shot from just inside the box went over the head of the Demon Deacons' keeper. Celina DeLeon (South Pasadena, CA) was credited with the assist.
Charlton evened the score again in the 82nd minute with her second goal of the game following up on a shot.
Stanford senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) had eight saves on the night
The Cardinal is next in action Sunday at 12:00 p.m. at Buck Shaw Stadium when it takes on Weber State in the final day of the tournament.
