The eighth-ranked Arizona Wildcats defeated the Stanford Cardinal tonight in Tucson, 3-0 in front of a crowd of 2,051 in McKale Center. Game scores were 15-7, 15-11, 15-11.

It was Arizona's first win over the Cardinal since 1993 and only the second in 40 meetings between the two teams.

The Wildcats came out roaring, scoring five unanswered points to open game one. They would score another quick five point after a kill by freshman middle blocker Sara McGee to take a 10-1 lead. With the 'Cats leading 12-2, a timeout by Stanford proved to be a spark for the Cardinal. They rattled off five straight points to close the gap to 12-7. But Stanford would come no closer falling 15-7.

Stanford would regroup in game two to take the early 5-2 lead but Arizona would rally to score five straight points to take a 7-5 lead. The Cardinal would tie the game on an ace by Sara McGee and take the lead on a kill by Ashley Ivy. But Arizona would once again tie the game at 10-all, the fourth tie of the game. The two teams would knot again at 11-11 before the 'Cats would go ahead 13-11. Stanford called another timeout but couldn't get any closer, losing game two, 15-11.

Game three began much like game two except it was the Wildcats jumping out to the 5-2 lead. They extended the lead to a commanding 13-4 before the Cardinal would answer with six straight points to close the gap to 13-11. But the Stanford rally would fall short with Arizona taking game three and the match 15-11.

For the Cardinal, Michelle Chambers led the team with 10 digs while Tara Conrad had eight kills. Stanford hit .200 for the match, improving their hitting percentage each game. McGee hit .636 on the night (9-2-11) and collected three blocks.

Stanford (7-5, 2-3 Pac-10) heads to Tempe to face Arizona State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Arena.
