Sept. 3, 2000

FRESNO, Calif. - - Senior midfielder Sean Sylvis scored in the 47th minute to ignite a six-goal, second-half outburst as No. 12 Stanford (2-0-0) routed Western Kentucky 6-0 to capture the championship of the Nike Goal Rush Classic hosted by Fresno State. The six goals marked the most prolific offensive day by the Cardinal since a 6-1 defeat of San Jose State on October 23, 1992. For the weekend, Stanford outscored its opponents 11-0 while outshooting them 56-10 (including 30-6 against Western Kentucky).

After a scoreless first half in which Stanford had 15 shots on goal, Sylvis took a feed from Lee Morrison at 46:10 and netted his first goal of the year for a 1-0 Cardinal lead. Roger Levesque extended the lead to 2-0 just 50 seconds later, scoring off an assist from Corey Woolfolk. Senior Ryan Nelsen assisted on a pair of goals in a seven minute stretch, feeding Scott Leber at 64:39 and Woolfolk at 71:21 for a 4-0 Stanford lead.

Stanford added two more goals over the last ten minutes, beginning with 1999 scoring leader Luke Rust connecting off a Matt Moses assist at 84:25. At 88:18, a pair of Cardinal players recorded their first collegiate points as junior defender Taylor Graham fed sophomore forward Johanes Maliza for the latter's first career goal.

Cardinal senior goalkeeper Adam Zapala made one save while posting his second consecutive shutout and 37th career whitewash. Hilltopper keeper Daryl Sattler finished with eight saves. Stanford is idle until its home opener on Tuesday, September 12, when it faces Bay Area rival USF in a 7:30 p.m. match at New Maloney Field.
