St. Louis, Mo. -- Stanford is on its way home after an overtime loss to Iowa. Last year's Big Ten champions were too much for the Cardinal. In its first overtime match, Stanford was unable to pull out the victory and fell 2-1.
Sophomore forward Amanda Billmyer recorded her fourth goal on the year with an assist from sophomore defender Liz Ott two minutes into the second half. Stanford was unable to score again, but Iowa would not back down. With 14:57 left in regulation, freshman Margot McMahon scored on a penalty corner to tie the game.
In the six-on-six overtime, Iowa bombarded Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro with 8 shots on goal, the final one good for a goal. Stanford was held to under 10 shots for the second time this season, both games resulting in a loss for the Cardinal.
Shapiro improved her season saves to 30 while allowing only the second and third goals of the year. The Stanford offense was stopped in its tracks, after posting 79 shots in its first four games, the Cardinal only attempted eight shots in today's contest.
The Cardinal return to The Farm for its home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. against the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks. Miami finished the 1999 season with a 6-13 overall record and a 2-8 Mid-American conference record to finish in fifth place.
