Utah Upsets No. 1 Stanford Women's Volleyball

The Stanford women's volleyball team was upset by Utah, 3-2, tonight at the Crimson Gym in Salt Lake City, Utah. Game scores were 15-13, 15-12, 6-15, 10-15, 9-15.

The Cardinal hit a season-low .148 for the match and were outblocked 18 to 14. Stanford also committed a season-high 11 service errors on the night.

Game one was a back and forth battle between the two teams which included six ties during the match. With Stanford down 11-13, the Cardinal rattled off four straight points to secure the win. Setter Lindsay Kagawa had a block solo to end the game.

With the game two tied 6-6, Stanford puts up eight straight points to go up 14-6 but the Utes came back to rally for six straight points and hold off two game points. But Stanford would close the door and win the game on a ball-handling error by the Utah setter to take game two.

Game three was dominated by Utah but the Cardinal held off three game points before losing 6-15.

The Utes also controled game four but Stanford pulled to within three at 10-13 before Utah closed out the game to force a game five.

Game five was tight with the two teams trading leads until Utah pushed ahead with three straight points to go up 10-6. Stanford would score three more points aand stay close at 9-13, but a Stanford error and a kill by Utah's McKelle Stilson sealed the match.

Outside hitter Ashley Ivy set a career high with 20 kills on the evening while setter Lindsay Kagawa had a career-high 64 assists. Ivy and Kagawa also set career highs in digs with 19 each for the match.

Stanford (3-1) heads to Provo, Utah, next for the BYU/Mizuno Classic which kicks off on Thursday, September 7. The Cardinal will face Fairfield in a 4 p.m. PT match.
