Junior outside hitter Sara Sandrik tallied a team-high 19 kills and 15 digs as the Stanford women's volleyball team defeated Fairfield, 3-1 this evening in Provo, Utah at the BYU/Mizuno Classic. Game scores were 15-6, 15-8, 12-15, 15-6.
The Cardinal hit .284 for the match while holding the Stags to a .192 hitting percentage.
Stanford handled Fairfield in game one, winning 15-6. Fairfield got to within two points at 6-8, but the Cardinal scored seven straight points to win the game. Outside hitter Michelle Chambers closed out the game with a kill.
Stanford jumped out to a 6-1 lead in game two and never looked back. The Stags pulled to within two at 5-7 but couldn't get any closer. The Cardinal would end the game with a resounding kill by middle blocker Tara Conrad.
Game three saw Fairfield jump out to an early 7-1 lead but Stanford fought back to take the lead at 9-7. The Stags, however, would not go down quietly and tied the game at 11-11. They went on to win the game 15-12.
The Cardinal scored five quick points to open game four before Fairfield scored its first point. The Stags closed the gap to 4-6 but were no match for Stanford as the Cardinal pulled away for the 15-5 win.
Freshman middle blocker Jenn Harvey notched 12 kills and six block assists for Stanford while outside hitter Ashley Ivy added 10 kills and eight digs. Middle blocker Tara Conrad had eight kills, 10 digs and four blocks on the night.
For the Stags, outside hitter Joanne Saunders tallied a match-high 31 kills while hitting .424 for the match.
Stanford is next in action tomorrow night, facing No. 17 BYU at 6 p.m. PT. The match can be heard on KZSU, Stanford's student radio station.
