Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Indiana - The No. 10-ranked Stanford women's soccer team shutout sixth-ranked Connecticut 3-0 in a first round game of the KeyBank Classic hosted by Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana Friday night.

Sophomore Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) tallied a goal and an assist as the Cardinal improves to 3-0-0, while UConn falls to 1-1-1. Wallis got Stanford on the board in the 41st minute when she dribbled through the Husky defense before sending a high shot into the upper left hand corner of the goal. The UConn goalie got a hand on the ball, but it wasn't enough to keep it from going in. Freshman Natalie Spilger (El Cajon, CA) assisted on the goal.

The Cardinal took a 1-0 lead into the locker room before adding two goals in the second half. At the 52:29 mark, Wallis found freshman Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA), who scored on a breakaway for her second goal of the year.

The third goal of the game came in the 80th minute when Katherine Harrington's (Ft. Worth, TX) cross from the left side bounced in front of the goal before freshman Brittany Oliviera (Los Angeles, CA) knocked it in for her first collegiate goal.

The Huskies outshot the Cardinal 15-9 for the match (11-5 in the first half), while Stanford was held to one corner kick (to Connecticut's four).

Stanford senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) had three saves on the night and recorded her third shutout of the season. Smolak is one shutout away from moving into fourth place on the all-time career list at Stanford.

The KeyBank Classic, one of the premier women's soccer tournaments in the country, continues Sunday with the Cardinal taking on host Notre Dame (No. 4) at 11:00 a.m. (PST), while Connecticut will face No. 2 Santa Clara. Notre Dame defeated Santa Clara 6-1 in the other first round game.
