The Stanford women's volleyball team fell to No. 17 Brigham Young tonight, 1-3, in Provo, Utah. Game scores were 9-15, 15-13, 6-15, 8-15. The Cougars had not beaten Stanford since 1987.
The Cardinal came ready to play, scoring three quick points in game one, but the Cougars would score the next seven points to take the lead. Stanford would battle back to within two at 8-10, but unforced errors would prove costly to the Cardinal as BYU won the game, 15-9.
Stanford stormed back in game two, taking the early 7-2 lead. BYU would close the gap and knot the game at 8-8. The lead went back and forth until middle blocker Tara Conrad recorded a service ace to win the game, 15-13.
Game three was tight with the game tied at 6-6, until the Cougars scored nine straight points to win the game 15-6. Stanford hit -.024 for the game.
Brigham Young took the early lead scoring five consecutive points to open the match. The Cardinal would fight back to tie the game three times but the Cougars would hold on to win the game (15-8) and the match.
For Stanford, junior Tara Conrad led the team with 14 kills and nine blocks. Sophomore Michelle Chambers notched a match-high 14 digs on the night. Freshmen Sara McGee and Sara Dukes each had nine kills for the Cardinal.
For the Cougars, Nina Puikkonen and Jackie Bundy notched 16 kills each while Sunny Tonga added 15 kills. Puikkonen also had 10 blocks on the evening.
Stanford (4-2) will wrap up play at the BYU/Mizuno Classic tomorrow with a single match against Oral Roberts.
