No. 13 Women's Soccer Rolls To 5-0 Win

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 13 Stanford women's soccer team blanked Weber State 5-0 Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Santa Clara Adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cardinal improves to 7-2-1, while the Wildcats fall to 0-10-1.

Junior defender Amy Sauer (Spring, TX) scored her first goal of the season at the 17:27 mark. Marcie Ward's (Alamo, CA) free kick from just outside the penalty box on the right side found the foot of Sauer, who one-touched the ball from the near post to the lower right corner.

Three minutes later, Ward tallied her sixth goal of the year after Kelsey Carlson(Citrus Heights, CA) passed her the ball outside the box. Ward dribbled through the Wildcat defense before finding the lower right corner of the net.

Senior captain Shauna Itri (Huntington Beach, CA) put the Cardinal up 3-0 with an unassisted goal in the 31st minute. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) was fouled at the top of the box, setting up the direct kick, which Itri drilled to the upper right hand corner.

Robyn deHay (Aiea, HI) scored her first collegiate goal with goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) recording the assist. Barnhart's free kick found deHay inside the penalty box, where she dribbled through a couple defenders and shot to the lower left corner.

The other score in the second half came when Wallis notched her team-leading 10th goal of the year, while Carlson picked up her second assist of the game (seventh of the season).

In the net Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) picked up her sixth shutout of the year(third shared), and is one shutout away from tieing her career best in a season of seven. Barnhart, a freshman, saw significant time in goal as she came in with over 14 minutes left in the first half, and played untill senior Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) came in with 27 minutes remaining. Barnhart (two saves) earned her third shared shutout, while Walsh (two saves) picked up her first.

Stanford ousthot Weber State 22-6 (10-2 in the first half), and the five goals scored was a season high for the Cardinal.

The Cardinal returns to action Friday night, Oct. 6, in the Pac-10 Conference opener at No. 10 Washington. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
