Field Hockey Defeats Cornell 2-1

STANFORD, Calif. - - Stanford's Sara Herman and Amanda Billmyer each scored goals and goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro made a tremendous save with less than 10 seconds remaining as the Cardinal defeated visiting Cornell 2-1.

With the victory, Stanford improves to 6-9 overall (3-2 in NorPac). Cornell falls to 5-5.

Stanford broke open a scoreless tie with 13:02 remaining in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Amrit China sent a pass to Herman, and the junior defender drilled a shot past Cornell keeper Maureen Sullivan for a 1-0 Cardinal lead.

Stanford extended its lead to 2-0 early in the second half, as with 31:24 remaining, Billmyer scored her team-high eighth goal of the year.

Cornell scored its lone goal at 13:19 when Amy Galebach scored off a penalty corner. The Big Red then had a chance to tie the game with nine seconds to go on a shot by Sommer Costabile, however, Shapiro made a diving save to preserve the Stanford victory.

Stanford is next in action on Saturday, October 14, when it hosts the University of Pennsylvania at 1:00 p.m.
