BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 20 Stanford women's soccer team fell to conference-rival and No. 10 California 2-0 Sunday afternoon before a record crowd of 1,582 at Edwards Stadium. The Cardinal falls to 8-4-1 overall (1-2-0 in Pac-10 play), while the Golden Bears improve to 12-1-1 (2-1-0).
Cal got on the board in the 21st minute when Laura Schott scored her 18th goal of the season. Brittany Kirk headed the ball to Kyla Sabo, who found Schott at the near post. Schott's first shot from five-yards was deflected by Stanford keeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR). Schott collected the rebound and found the back of the net for the score, which held up for a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Bears added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Sabo dribbled through the Cardinal defense and fired a shot to the lower left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Stanford was outshot 14-9, with Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) leading the Cardinal with three shots on goal. Smolak recorded seven saves in the net.
The Cardinal continues Pac-10 play Friday night at 7:30 p.m. when it hosts Arizona.
