Oct. 20, 2000
Stanford's Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) scored the game-winner just 12:24 into the match and Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) added a second-half goal as the No. 20-ranked Cardinal women's soccer team defeated visiting Arizona 2-0 in a Pacific-10 Conference game at New Maloney Field.
With the victory, Stanford improves to 9-4-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the Pac-10. Arizona drops to 3-10-2 and 0-4-1. The Cardinal, which played its first home game since Sept. 17, remained a perfect 5-0-0 at New Maloney Field in 2000.
Stanford broke a scoreless tie at the 12:24 mark when Carlson netted her first goal of the season. Defender Katherine Harrington (Ft. Worth, TX) played a through ball to Carlson, who took a touch before drilling a 25-yard shot that deflected off Arizona goalkeeper Shannon Monti and into the back of the net.
The game remained 1-0 until the 85:47 mark, when Ward notched her seventh goal of the year. Again, the goal came off a through ball, as midfielder Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) slotted a pass to Ward on the right side. The freshman forward then connected from just inside the goalie box, sending a shot to the far post.
Cardinal senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) made two saves en route to her eighth shutout (three shared) in 2000. Monti, who faced 14 shots, finished with five saves for the Wildcats.
Stanford is next in action on Sunday, October 22, when it hosts Arizona State in a Pac-10 match at New Maloney Field. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
