Freshman forward Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) had two goals and an assistwhile Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) netted her second game-winnerthis weekend to lead the No. 20-ranked Stanford women's soccer team pastArizona State 4-2 in a Pacific-10 Conference match at New Maloney Field.
With the victory, Stanford is now 10-4-1 overall and 3-2-0 in thePac-10, marking the 13th consecutive year the program has reached the10-win plateau. Arizona State falls to 11-5-0 and 2-4-0.Stanford jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two goals in a three-minute spanmidway through the first half. At the 17:33 mark, the Cardinalconverted off a corner kick when Ward sent a pass to sophomore CallieWithers (Los Altos Hills, CA), who knocked in a header from ten yardsout. Three minutes later, Ward took a through ball from defender AlisonPabon (Dallas, TX) and slotted a shot to the far post.
Arizona State cut the deficit in half just :30 seconds before halftimewhen Stacey Tullock corralled a loose ball and scored. Stanford,however, answered back eight minutes into the second stanza when Carlsondrilled a shot past Sun Devil goalkeeper Erin Reinke for a 3-1 lead.The Sun Devils again got within one goal at the 64:55 mark. JaclynSmith beat a defender down the right sideline and sent a cross toAntoinette Marjanovich, who found the back of the net to the far post.At 80:08, Ward provided the final 4-2 margin when she beat a defenderone-on-one and scored her second goal of the match.Both keepers were tested all day, as Stanford took 15 shots whileArizona State had 14. Cardinal senior goalie Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego,OR) finished with six saves while Reinke also had six, including five inthe second half.
Stanford is next in action on Friday, Oct. 27, when the Cardinal travelsto UCLA for a 7:30 p.m. match with the Bruins.
