No. 18 Women's Soccer Comes From Behind For 4-2 Win At No. 15 USC

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 18 Stanford women's soccer team came back from a 2-0 deficit Sunday afternoon to defeat No. 15 USC 4-2 in a Pacific-10 Conference match at McAllister Field. The Cardinal improves to 11-5-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the Pac-10 while the Trojans fall to 11-5-2 (3-3-1).

USC took the lead at the 23:25 mark and added another score eight minutes later. With seven minutes left in the first half, Stanford freshman Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) scored on a volley inside the box off an assist from Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA). Just :38 seconds later, sophomore Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) tied the game when she fired a shot from 20-yards out that hit the crossbar and went in.

The Cardinal broke the 2-2 tie five minutes into the second half when Ward found the back of the net off an assist from Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA). Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) then tallied her team-leading 11th goal of the season three minutes later, heading in a Katherine Harrington (Fort Worth, TX) cross.

Senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) recorded five saves in the net, while Trojan keeper Shaelyn Fernandes had eight saves. Stanford outshot USC 19-14 in the match, which was slowed in the second half due to rain.

The Cardinal returns to action to close out Pac-10 play on Friday, Nov. 3 as it plays host to Oregon at 7:30 p.m.
