Third-ranked Men's Water Polo Defeats Seventh-ranked Pepperdine

Malibu, Calif. - A four-meter penalty shot by sophomore two-meter man Peter Hudnut with 1:39 to play in the first overtime proved to be the game-winning goal as the third-ranked Stanford water polo team defeated seventh-ranked Pepperdine by a final score of 9-8 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game played Sunday afternoon ar Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.

Hudnut scored a game-high total of five goals for the Cardinal in a hard-fought contest that was played in a steady rain. With the victory, Stanford improved to 10-8 overall and 2-4 in the MPSF.

Stanford jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter, but Pepperdine scored the game's next three goals. The Waves pulled within a 4-3 count when senior holeman Peter Joseph scored with 1:58 to play in the second quarter. However, the Cardinal got a much-needed emotional boost when junior driver Rob Canales scored as time expired at the end of the first half, giving Stanford a 5-3 lead at the break.

Pepperdine outscored Stanford by a 3-1 margin in the third quarter, and knotted the contest at 6-6 with 29 seconds to play in the third period. A four-meter shot by Hudnut at the 6:16 mark of the fourth quarter gave Stanford a 7-6 advantage, but Pepperdine's Greg Lonzo scored two straight goals helping Pepperdine gain their first lead of the game. Hudnut tallied a goal at the 2:48 mark, and the game remained tied at 8-8 forcing overtime.

Clinging to a 9-8 lead, Stanford was called for stalling with 23 seconds to play in the second overtime period. Pepperdine retained control of the ball, but a Pepperdine skip shot with 19 seconds remaining was off the mark, and Stanford ran out the clock to seal the victory.
