No. 13 Women's Soccer Falls To No. 9 Washington

SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 13-ranked Stanford women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 game to No. 9 Washington on Friday night in the Pacific-10 Conference opener for both teams at Husky Soccer Field. The Cardinal falls to 7-3-1 (0-1-0), while the Huskies improved to 10-1-0 (1-0-0).

Washington scored the lone goal of the game at the 16:19 mark when senior Tami Bennett converted a cross from Katie Goodeve. Goodeve's cross from the left side found Bennett, who touched it past Stanford goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR).

The shot count was even in the first half at eight apiece, but the Huskies held the advantage in the second half, outshooting the Cardinal 18-17 in the game. Stanford freshman Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) recorded six shots while sophomore midfielder Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) tallied three shots on goal. The Cardinal had six corner kicks to the Huskies' two.

Smolak had four saves on the night, while Husky goalkeeper Hope Solo had six saves, including four on point-blank Cardinal shots.

The Cardinal returns to action Sunday at Washington State. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
