Junior Tara Conrad tallied a career-high 24 kills as No. 21 Stanford defeated Washington State, 3-1, tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 15-7, 10-15, 15-5, 15-13.
Stanford improves to 8-6 overall, 3-4 in conference action, while the Cougars fall to 10-5, 1-5 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal had a stellar match at the net notching a season-high 23 total blocks while holding the Cougars to just six blocks on the night.
The Cardinal came out firing on all cylinders in game one, scoring the first 11 points to stake the early lead. But the Cougars would not go down quietly and chipped into the Stanford lead to come within six at 7-13. The Cardinal would not be denied as they closed out the game on two straight blocks by Jennifer Detmer and Sara Dukes, 15-7. Stanford outhit the Cougars .325 to .149 for the game.
Washington State jumped out to a 9-1 lead as the Cardinal's passing broke down. But Stanford regrouped to pull within four at 9-13 when the Cougars were plagued with poor passing. WSU would hold on for the 15-10 win to even the match at one game apiece.
Stanford took an early 6-1 lead over the Cougars and never looked back. The Cardinal got excellent blocking the entire match for points. Stanford would win the game on a service ace by Ashley Ivy. They tallied nine total blocks in game three.
Game four see-sawed back and forth between the two teams until Stanford took the 10-6 lead. WSU inched back to close the gap to 8-10. After a quick kill by Detmer, the Cougars tied the game at 11-11. Stanford went up on a WSU hitting error and pushed it to 13-11 on a kill by Ivy. Washington State fought back to tie the game again at 13-13. Stanford took the 14-13 lead on a Cougar error and won the game and the match on a kill by Detmer.
For the Cardinal, Jennifer Detmer notched 15 kills and 12 blocks while Sara McGee had 11 kills and six blocks. Conrad tallied a match-high 26 digs and freshman setter Anna Robinson set a career high with eight blocks on the night.
Stanford hosts Washington tomorrow night at 7 p.m. in Maples Pavilion in continued conference action.
